
1990 Creation of Friends of the North York Public Library.
1993 BOOKEnds bookstore opens beneath North York Central Library.
1994 Creation of Friends of Toronto Public Library.
1997 Friends of TPL holds its first big book sale, at Northern District Library.
1998 Amalgamation of Metropolitan Toronto and its municipalities into the City of Toronto.
As a result of the 1998 City of Toronto amalgamation, Friends of the North York Public Library and Friends of Toronto Public Library merge to become a single organization: the current Friends of Toronto Public Library.
2001 BOOKEnds South bookstore opens, located at the Toronto Reference Library.
The current organization has two chapters: North Chapter (formerly Friends of the North York Public Library) and South Chapter (formerly Friends of Toronto Public Library).
2008 Friends of TPL collectively raises $1 million in lifetime total donations in support of library programs.
2015 Friends of TPL reaches $2 million in lifetime total donations.
2016 BOOKEnds North temporarily closes for renovations in December 2016, and reopens in November 2019 in a new location within the same building.


2020 Due to COVID public health restrictions both BOOKEnds stores are closed until 2022.
2021 Toronto Public Library eliminates overdue fines on all children’s materials thanks to the help of lead donor Friends of TPL, South Chapter.
2022 BOOKEnds stores reopen as COVID restrictions lift.
2023 Friends of TPL reaches $3 million in lifetime total donations.
